Why Screens Lie: AI Artwork vs. Commercial Print – Understanding why your AI-generated images look stunning on digital displays and what it actually takes to transform them into physical print ready products.
AI generated artwork has exploded in popularity, so we wanted to share some helpful advice to ensure you get the best result with your printed products.Ā
We see a range of designs everyday that are quickly produced by AI and look impressive from the outset, but unfortunately that does not mean they will be usable print files nor will they look as vibrant as they appear on the screen. We want to help you understand the limitations and what it might mean for your project.Ā
The best comparison we can share with you is ‘The Baker’s Analogy‘ – Bringing a flat AI image to a commercial printer is like bringing a photograph of a cake to a baker and asking them to change the filling or edit a frosting layer. The image shows what the end result looks like, but to actually construct, modify, and produce it, you need individual ingredients, structural recipes, and precise vector geometry.
What AI can do
- AI can Mockup artwork to suit your brief, if giving it careful instructions. It can explore styles, layouts, colour directions, and visual themes with good prompting.
- Can lie in regards to files being print ready or that they are exported as a specific size.
- Can use images that may need a commercial license to use, putting your printed product in jeopardy.
What AI cannot do
- Produce print ready files that are to scale, correct resolution, contain bleed area or be CMYK.
- Produce print ready artwork that can be used for special finishes such as spot gloss or foiling.
- Produce files that can be edited.
- Produce files that can be updated over time for reprints.
- Source high resolution, licensed images and use them in the artwork.
5 Key Differences Between Your Screen and Commercial Presses
| Technical Area | What You See On Screen (Digital AI) | What Happens On Press (Physical Print) |
| 1. Colour Mode | RGB LIGHT AI generates artwork using RGB pixels (light). Glowing neons and hyper-saturated hues display effortlessly on backlit glass. | CMYK INK Presses print with physical ink (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black). Out-of-gamut RGB neons shift to muted, flat, or darker tones in ink. |
| 2. File Structure | FLATTENED RASTER AI outputs a single flat grid of pixels. Elements, backgrounds, and text are fused together into one uneditable layer. | SEPARATED VECTORS Pre-press requires editable layers, isolated vector paths, true typography, cut lines, and bleed margins to control press output. |
| 3. Resolution | 72 ā 96 DPI Standard screens only require low pixel density. Images appear sharp on small phone screens and monitors. | 300 DPI MINIMUM High-speed presses require 300+ dots per inch at 100% physical size. Low-res AI art turns blurry, fuzzy, or blocky when printed. |
| 4. Micro-Flaws | HIDDEN Glitches, uneven lines, asymmetric shapes, and soft blur artifacts are masked by screen scale and backlighting. | MAGNIFIED BY INK High-density ink printing sharpens and exposes every AI hallucination, floating artifact, and distorted edge clearly. |
| 5. Embellishments | SIMULATED EFFECTS Foil, spot gloss, embossing, and die-cuts are rendered as painted pixel tricks and artificial lighting. | PHYSICAL TOOLING Blocks for foiling, embossing and more require vector files and precise line paths to instruct finishing machines. |
AI may save you time arriving at a concept, BUT if you are spending a lot of time fine tuning that design, please be aware that it most likely will need to be re-created by us for print use and this does incur design fees. Sometimes it is worth thinking about what your time is worth versus the cost of a professional service.
How you can use AI successfully – Concepting & Mood Boards: Early brainstorming with AI can help communicate to the designer or printer your desired styles, layouts, colour directions, and visual themes.
What the professionals need to do with your concept – Rebuilding & Vectorizing: Our design studio redraws elements, typographically sets content and sources images. The AI concept is then created into true print-ready vector assets.
