Foiling or foil stamping is a special overprint finish which can be used on paper or plastic. Usually done in silver or gold, foiling provides a striking finish on areas of your design. Unlike traditional ink printing, foiling is applied by a heated metal plate which stamps the foil material onto the paper or plastic using a ‘die’.

While gold and silver foils are the most commonly used, there is a range of different colours and types of foils available, including satin foils which are not as reflective. The metallic foil options for paper and plastic are slightly different, contact us for further information or to discuss using a metallic foil for your plastic card or paper product.

A holographic foil is a special type of metallic foil which gives off a stunning spectrum of reflected light. These types of foils are also used for security measures on plastic cards.

Tips for using a metallic foil

Try to avoid using foiling for very intricate shapes, lines or text less than 10pt as the foil can spread marginally, and fine detail may not reproduce accurately.
